Namibia is the land of shifting deserts, colossal red rocks and mountains that stretch from savannah to sky. Unsurprisingly, it is the landscapes and the hinterland that place Namibia at the forefront of adventure tourism on the continent. In this article, we have decided to present to you the emblematic places to visit in Namibia. Let’s take stock!
Etosha National Park
If you can only stop at one of Namibia’s national parks, make it Etosha. The latter has been renowned for its wealth of rare animals for over 100 years. The region encompasses dry salt flats and labyrinthine valleys of the Leopard Hills. Come and spy bush elephants and plains zebras at the waterholes, spot the very rare black rhinoceros, or witness the appearance of the antelope. To discover the country in all its diversity, do not hesitate to book a stay with a travel agency. The Nomade Aventure website presents rather interesting trips.
Sossusvlei
Surrounded by immense and imposing dunes – some of the highest in the world – Sossusvlei is a place that never fails to take your breath away. 4WD tours are the most popular way to see the sights. Visitors can expect to spot antelope, oryx, springbok and ostrich as they venture into the wilderness. It’s an experience not to be missed, especially if you’re feeling adventurous.
The Skeleton Coast
Few landscapes define Namibia’s wilderness as well as the Skeleton Coast Park. This vast expanse of endless dunes and Atlantic surf stretches for no less than 500 kilometers. It is bounded by the point where the arid inland deserts meet the ocean and is renowned as one of the most dangerous stretches of coastline in the world. Countless rusting hulks of old tankers and skiffs, fishing boats, and convoy vessels bear witness to this.
Windhoek
Windhoek is an interesting place that encapsulates what Namibia is all about. Located practically in the heart of the country, the city began life as a small pastoral settlement, known for its fresh water source. Today, this groundwater keeps the city’s interior – from the palm-studded zoo to the manicured Parliament Gardens – green. There are also Bavarian-style towers that betray the old German influence, as well as a series of quintessentially Swabian beer halls.
Caprivi
Caprivi – or more precisely the Caprivi Strip – is a long, thin strip of land that extends into the heart of western southern Africa from the northern edge of Namibia. Almost half the length of Namibia proper, it is home to habitats and climate zones found nowhere else in the country. It also plays an important role as a connection for rare species that migrate inland and towards the coast, such as the Namibian elephant and the African wild dog.
